Connecting population science to development policy in Africa

Many of the world's development challenges have demographic underpinnings. Some of these challenges (e.g., mortality, morbidity, or aging) are inherently core topics in demography. Others (e.g., economic growth, poverty, inequality, or environmental change) are likely to be affected by changes in the structure, distribution, size, concentration, composition, or the normative life-course of national populations.

Population research is thus critical to an effective approach to development challenges. Yet this research remains insufficiently connected to development planning in sub-Saharan Africa. Building these connections requires fusing the rigor and detail of the best demographic research with the pragmatic demands of policy planning.

Against this background, CPSA seeks to advance demographic training and policy communication in sub-Saharan Africa. It brings together several partners around a series of complementary activities in the areas of training, research and outreach.
